OBTAINING YOUR COSTA RICAN NAVIGATION PERMIT

When your vessel first arrives within our territorial jurisdiction, Costa Rica Customs will typically grant a ninety (90) day permission for the vessel to stay and navigate within our coastal waters. This initial navigation permit is necessary if the vessel is going to be used for recreational sport fishing and other non-commercial activities in Costa Rican waters.

The law for the Promotion of Tourist Marinas and Coastal Development in Costa Rica recently approved contains the following provisions:

The chartering license is created, which must be paid by foreign flag vessels authorized to carry out water transportation activities.
Foreign flag vessels with a length equal to or greater than [twenty-four meters] 24 meters, whose use is commercial or entertainment and not cargo transportation, may develop water transport, diving, and recreational activities, under the modality of leasing or chartering in Costa Rican waters and territory.
Crew of foreign-flag vessels. The governmental authorities shall attend, within ten working days, the request for temporary work permits for the crew of foreign-flag vessels, under the chartering regime, when so required.

Costa Rica opens its doors to digital nomads

Digital nomads can now establish their "offices" at Costa Rica’s beaches, in the mountains, near volcanoes, or within a variety of ecosystems. The country recently pioneered an innovative law to attract workers and remote service providers on an international scale, offering benefits such as:

Non-resident immigration

Grants non-resident immigration status to the beneficiaries.

Stay for up to one year

Any foreign person, with an income greater than $ 3,000 per month, may stay for up to one year in Costa Rica with a visa that can be extended for an additional year.

Income of at least $5,000

Those traveling with family members must show an income of at least $ 5,000 per month.

The importation of equipment

The importation of a basic personal computer, information technology, telecommunications gear, or similar equipment necessary to carry out duties or provide services, is exempt from customs duties.

Driver's license valid in the country

A driver's license granted and valid in the beneficiary's country of origin will be valid for driving in Costa Rica.
